If you’re competing in the Olympic figure skating finals, it’s pretty clear who the judges are. They sit in a special box and hold signs. When competing for a gold medal, it’s not helpful to ignore the judges or even to act as though you didn’t sign up to be judged by them, because you did. Most of the time, though, the identity of the judges isn’t nearly as clear.
